The online giant Alibaba is opening a California store to sell online shop services for consumers.
The company, which has a major presence in China, announced the store at a ceremony Monday to open at the University of California, San Francisco, in the city’s trendy Fruitvale neighborhood.
The San Francisco-based company, founded in 1997, is a pioneer in the development of cloud-based software.
The company’s products include financial services, medical information, and video services.
The Alibaba online store is a small-scale version of Alibaba’s retail business.
Alibaba is expanding into California in a bid to grow its footprint in the country.
The online giant is expected to have about 1,000 employees by the end of 2020.
The California store will have a minimum of one-third employees and a maximum of 10 percent, according to the company.
Alibaba is also developing a similar online store in Singapore.
